Jobs: Find your Career

The First Day

by Lanett Bennett

"Oh my goodness, they are all staring at me!" The first day on any new temporary assignment can be a little scary and sometimes downright terrifying. It's like you're a kid again and it's the first day at a new school; you've got the same butterflies in your stomach. But there's nothing to fear; these few preparation tips will make things a little easier for you.

Dress for success!

Pick out your wardrobe very carefully for the first day. If you dress well, you'll feel more confident about your upcoming day. It's best to start conservatively and even to over-dress at first. Once you arrive you can take your cue from those around you. Just don't start your first day too casual because you want to continue making the good impression. So ladies, try not to wear something too trendy; if you do not feel comfortable in it, err on the side of caution. You can never go wrong with a conservative colored skirt/slacks and blouse. Men should wear slacks and a collared shirt (tuck it in!), check with your staffing manager to see if ties are required.

What makes you different?

Look within yourself to find what you have to bring to the table that no one else but you can bring. Whether it be your typing speed, computer skills, or sunny smile, use it to become a vital organ in the workplace body. You want them to dread when it comes time for your assignment to end. If you are on a temp-to-hire position you want them to know that you will fit well within their organization.

"What did you say?"

I've seen a lot of assignments that end because the individual "didn't catch on." Because you are there in a temporary status you need to make it a point to retain the information you are being given. Always bring a pen and pad to take good notes. It is time consuming for a client to take the time to train a new person, but it is frustrating when that person asks the same questions over and over. If you take good notes, then you will find that not only will it help you perform the tasks assigned, it will show the client that you are a conscientious employee.

Be Friendly and Fit In

Even as a temporary employee, you are a part of the team you're working with. Remember what makes you different? Use that to build your confidence and continue making a good impression by being friendly. Chat with the employees you work with in the lunch room or around the water cooler. Shake hands with people you meet, remember their names, and say "hi" the next time you see them. Similarly, don't be sour. If you start to hate your current assignment, don't let it affect your work or your mood. You can always vent at home or with your staffing manager. (If something illegal or inappropriate happens and makes you feel uncomfortable, call your Headway staffing manager right away.)

Keep It Up!

Finally and most importantly, maintain the same work ethic for the remainder of your assignment. It is easy to impress the first day, but if you get relaxed and start to slip in some of these areas it can lead to an early end of an assignment. Stay on top of your game and make them sorry to see you go! If you make an effort most clients will give you a great review and request you again. The bottom line is to make a lasting first impression on your first day!
